A LEVEL CHEMISTRY

This course suits anyone interested in medicine, pharmacy, chemical engineering, veterinary forensic or material science.

Year One AS

Unit 1 Chemistry for Life the study of elements and compounds in the universe, the solar system and the human body and a study of fuels and the contribution that chemists make to the development of better fuels. 1hr. written exam.

Unit 2 Chemistry of Natural Resources the study of the extraction of halogens from minerals in the sea, the chemical processes in the atmosphere and the development of polymers. 1hr 45 min written exam.

Unit 3 Chemistry in practice five practical skills are teacher assessed and externally moderated.

Year Two A2

Unit 4 Chemistry of Materials a study of medicines, polymers and modern materials, proteins, enzymes and DNA and production and uses of steel.
1hr 30 mins. synoptic written paper.

Unit 5 Chemistry by Design the study of industrial processes, efficient food supply, colour in pigments and paints, the oceans and medicine design. 2hr written synoptic exam.

Unit 6 Chemistry Individual Investigation Students work on a chemical investigation of their choice. Teacher assessed and externally moderated.
