A LEVEL COMMUNICATION STUDIES
We study every aspect of communication: how we communicate inside ourselves, to other people, to animals and machines. We go beneath the surface to analyse how communication can control and determine how we think, act and interact.
Year One AS
Unit 1: Students learn to recognise how people think, feel and form opinions of themselves and others through communicating within a specific culture. We learn to analyse cultural products: advertisements, C.D. covers, leaflets etc and discover how they reflect society's values and ideals. 1¾ hr exam.
Unit 2: Students produce a 500 word study exploring how they present themselves to society through their, appearance, language and behaviour. They then produce a 100 word study of how individuals “fit” into society and how much society controls that “fit”.
Year Two AS
Unit 3: We learn how different academic disciplines identify and examine how power in society is communicated in our culture. Issues of gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality are explored and the ways in which we tell ourselves about these issues in creative formats as examined as well as the ways in which we design spaces and places and they in turn “design” us. 2hr written exam.
Unit 4: Students choose a topic from a selection provided e.g. body modification, celebrity or film going, and undertake their own 2000 word investigation. They then produce a creative web-based response to their findings.
