A LEVEL DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY
The course is about 3 Dimensional Product Design. We investigate materials and their properties, designers and their practices plus the designs they realise. Students are encouraged to develop a questioning and critical awareness of their constructed environment.
Year One AS
Unit 1: Materials and Components
Students explore the qualities, properties and use of materials and components that they may choose to use in their practical work
1 ½ hr written exam.
Unit 2: Coursework
Students choose a project of their own choice and create a folder and 3D piece of work to meet the criteria of the exam specification
over a period of approx. 40 hrs.
Unit 3: Design and Market Influences
We examine the historical, physical, and cultural factors which influence design practice and marketing 1 ½ hr written exam.
Year Two A2
Unit 4: Product Case Study
A product is chosen that can be disassembled and the materials and processes of its makeup identified. A folder is constructed to demonstrate the student's in-depth understanding of the artefact approx. 4000 words.
Unit 5: Coursework
Similar to the processes in Unit 2 but with far greater depth and complexity of analysis students create a folder and 3D outcome over a period of approx. 50 hrs.
Unit 6: Industrial Processes, Materials and Design in Practice
Students prepare to show an in-depth theoretical understanding of design issues, process and the manner in which products are manufactured. This is a synoptic exercise requiring a synthesis of knowledge attained throughout the course 3 hr written exam.
