A Level English Literature

A LEVEL ENGLISH LITERATURE

This subject is designed for enthusiastic readers who can express themselves clearly in writing and are sensitive to the human condition. You will also need an interest in contemporary culture, politics and art and develop an awareness of the cultures of the period in which the texts you study were written.

Year One AS

Unit 1:  Poetry and Prose 1800-1945
Study at least two texts in order to develop literary and critical skills and understand the contexts of the writing.
Assessment by a 2 hour exam (60% of AS)

Unit 2:  Literature Post 1900
A study of modern literature, at least one text produced after 1990. Compare the texts which will be linked.
Assessment by coursework (40% of AS)

 

Year Two A2

Unit 3:  Drama and Pre 1800 Poetry
Study a Shakespeare play and other related texts written before 1800.
Assessment by 2 hour exam (30% of A2)

Unit 4:  Texts in Time
An extended individual study of literacy texts across genres. Emphasis on cultural and contextual influences. Students are encouraged to develop research skills.
Assessment by coursework (20% of A2)
