Humanities - A level Geography

A LEVEL GEOGRAPHY

The course is 50% physical and 50% human Geography, varying in content from meteorology and climatology to a study of population and industry. In addition to several one day fieldtrips, all students will participate in a local Fieldwork investigation.

Year One AS

Unit 1: We study rivers and the causes and effects of flooding and other related disasters. We examine climate types and their hazards: hurricanes, tornadoes and the debate surrounding global warming. We look at energy and life in terms of ecosystems, biomes, soils and matters bio-geographical and their effects such as deforestation
1 hr data response exam.
Unit 2: We examine population dynamics and explore issues of growth and decline and the likely causes of migration.  In studying settlement patterns and processes we discuss the growth and development of towns and cities. We then look at types of industry and explore possible reasons for industrial growth and decline 1 hr data response exam.
Unit 3: We study geographic and fieldwork skills 1 hr written exam.

Year Two A2

Unit 4: Students undertake and complete their coursework assignment which is externally marked and externally moderated.
Unit 5: We study the physical geography of coastlines and issues surrounding their management and conservation. We examine Geomorphological processes and hazards by studying tsunamis, volcanoes and earthquakes and possible means of reducing their impacts?   1 ½ hr data response exam and essay paper.
Unit 6: We discuss the challenges and issues posed by the need to manage cities in both the developed and developing world, and in addition, examine population and issues related to resource management.  1 ½ hr data response exam and essay paper.
