Modern Languages - A-Level German

A LEVEL GERMAN

The course goes well beyond the work done at GCSE taking students forward to a deeper understanding of German language, culture and issues. The skills of listening to and reading a wide variety of texts, writing in increasingly complex and accurate German, and becoming confident in presenting ideas and arguments orally are key objectives of the course.

Year One AS

Unit 1: students study: Family, Rights and Responsibilities, Leisure, Health, School and Jobs and Careers  1 ½ hr exam on Listening, Reading and Writing.

Unit 2: At present we tend to study the issue of foreigners in Germany, looking at the problems faced by both migrant workers, ethnic Germans and refugees 1 hr long essay paper.

Unit 3: This unit reprises the topics of unit 1 for the Speaking exam. Students prepare a two-minute presentation on a topic of their choice. This is followed by a discussion of their topic, as well as a further conversation on other topics studied in unit 1  15 mins.oral exam.

Year Two A2
Unit 4: contains the topics of Germany and Europe, The German Political System, State and Individual, Distribution of Wealth, Global Issues, Health, Transport, Crime and Punishment and Racism  1 ½ hr exam paper Listening, Reading Writing plus a short translation.

Unit 5:  Students may decide either to prepare for an essay exam or, as
we recommend, produce two pieces of coursework of 700 words each on topics of their choosing.

Unit 6: Students prepare for a conversation part of which involves a discussion of their coursework topic chosen in Unit 5 15 minute oral exam.
