A-LEVEL LAW
This subject is an introduction to the English Legal System. The focus is on criminal law, in particular Offences against the Person, but the subject also includes study of the law of Negligence, as well as the study of legal processes and procedures. Students use a wide range of skills, such as research, analysis and evaluation of the law, problem solving and debating and discussion.
Year One AS
Unit 1: Students look at how the law is made, the institutions that are involved and the problems associated with law making 1 hr written exam.
Unit 2: We look at how legal disputes can be resolved, both through the court processes and through other means. Students also investigate the roles of different groups in the legal system, such as barristers and the judiciary 1 hr written exam.
Unit 3: This problem-solving paper requires students to apply their knowledge of legal rules, cases and Acts of Parliament to assess criminal and civil liability 1 hr written exam.
Year Two A2
Unit 4: Building on the foundations laid in Unit 3, students take an in-depth look at Offences against the Person, including murder and manslaughter, to assess liability. Students are also required to analyse critically the law currently in place 1 ¼ hr written exam.
Unit 5: Staying with criminal law, in this module students are required to turn their attention to Offences against Property, looking at a wide range of offences such as theft, robbery, burglary and criminal damage 1 ¼ hr written exam.
Unit 6: This is a synoptic paper, which uses the knowledge built up over the whole A-Level to assess the relationship the law has with key concepts such as morality, justice and fault 1 ½ hr written exam.
