GCSE LEVEL ENGLISH
This is a one-year course primarily designed for students retaking the exam in order to gain a higher grade than they have previously achieved, i.e. grade D or below. It encourages students to read a wide range of material for a variety of purposes and to use English in its spoken and written forms with a care for content, appropriateness and accuracy.
The course meets the requirements of the National Curriculum.
Assessment includes three parts:
Part 1: Speaking and Listening coursework
Students will be assessed in class on their speaking and listening skills, working individually and in groups. Internally assessed 20%
Part 2: Written Coursework
Each student presents a coursework folder containing a selection of his or her best work. This folder contains responses to Shakespeare, pre-1900 poetry and an individual creative exercise written in response to a choice of briefs provided by the examination board.
Internally assessed, externally moderated 20%
Part 3 : Written exams
The first written exam tests understanding of a pre-prepared fictional text (usually a selection of short stories which are thematically linked) which can be annotated and taken into the exam 1 ¾ hr written exam.
The second exam tests understanding of non-fiction texts including a response to a print graphics media product 1 ¾ hr written exam.
These two exams contribute 60% towards the final grade and can be taken in January or June.
