GCSE LEVEL ENGLISH

This is a one-year course primarily designed for students retaking the exam in order to gain a higher grade than they have previously achieved, i.e. grade D or below.  It encourages students to read a wide range of material for a variety of purposes and to use English in its spoken and written forms with a care for content, appropriateness and accuracy.

The course meets the requirements of the National Curriculum.

Assessment includes three parts:

Part 1: Speaking and Listening coursework                    
Students will be assessed in class on their speaking and listening skills, working individually and in groups. Internally assessed 20%

Part 2: Written Coursework                                    
Each student presents a coursework folder containing a selection of his or her best work. This folder contains responses to Shakespeare, pre-1900 poetry and an individual creative exercise     written in response to a choice of briefs provided by the examination board.
                          Internally assessed, externally moderated   20%

Part 3 : Written exams                                                   
The first written exam tests understanding of a pre-prepared fictional text (usually a selection of short stories which are thematically linked) which can be annotated and taken into the exam    1 ¾ hr  written exam.

The second exam tests understanding of non-fiction texts including a response to a print graphics media product    1 ¾ hr written exam.

 

These two exams contribute 60% towards the final grade and can be taken in January or June.
