NATIONAL CERTIFICATE IN SPORT LEVEL THREE
This vocationally based course is the equivalent to one “A” level. Sporting prowess is not necessary but students must have a genuine interest in the industry, be organized willing to coach younger pupils and able to undertake personal study and research. Successful students will be able to enter employment in the sports sector or study related topics at University. There is no written exam but portfolio evidence is internally and externally moderated.
Six modules are studied over a period of two years.
Unit 1: Students will study the history and development of sport in the UK. They will be required to prepare presentations on the causes and effects of gender, cultural and racial divides, the influence of media coverage on sport and issues surrounding performance enhancing drugs.
Unit 2: Principles of Sport Coaching
Students develop an understanding of the qualities and skills needed to be a successful sports coach. They will be required to plan and deliver a coaching session to their peers and younger students and practice a variety of sports.
Unit 3: Fitness and Training
Students develop an understanding of the principles and methods of training and the short and long term effects on the body. They will interview a client and implement a variety of fitness tests before designing a personalised fitness training programme for the selected client.
Unit 4: The Sports Industry
Students will examine the diverse nature of the sports industry: retail, tourism, coaching and spectator sports and will consider the impact that the 2012 Olympic Games will have on the economy.
Unit 5: Sport in the UK
Students will investigate the role of Government and appointed bodies in promoting sport and its provision from grass roots level to elite performance. Students will undertake off-site visits and outside speakers will be invited to the College.
