I have always enjoyed sewing and craft activities and when I saw Patchwork and Quilting classes advertised I decided to apply. It was not without trepidation though as I was still concerned about wheel chair access and facilities.
The college however was extremely supportive and arranged an introductory visit for me which allayed my fears about those issues.
The next hurdle I felt was how the Tutor would react to my disability and needs as well as the apprehension of meeting new people.
My fears were groundless though as the Tutor was incredibly supportive and could not have done more to help me. My fellow quilters were kindness itself.
I came to patchwork totally unaware of the challenges it would present. I thought "sewing - I can do that!" But there is a lot more to this craft than you think. There are fabrics to buy; sewing machines to be carried, equipment to be taken to class-all of which are added difficulties for me. In addition to all that there is the cutting out of fabrics using a rotary cutter and board which is best carried out standing up.
Again the College came up trumps. The carpenter was given the unusual job of shortening the metal legs of a table so now I am able to cut out my fabrics in class easily.
I am thoroughly enjoying my course. I hope it will leave me with an absorbing hobby which is both creative and productive. I have also met a group of very nice people.
“The learner voice”
The College was proud to be shortlisted, as one of four Colleges, for an ‘Education Oscars’ event organised by the Centre for Excellence in Leadership. It was a National competition and all Further Education providers were invited to submit an application. The College’s Adult Education Department sent in a piece of work which we had done in March 2007, where we had invited our Adult students to be interviewed by Governors, Community Education Council members and Staff about their current course and experience at the College and about their ideas for further courses. Ninety-three students took part in this consultation evening. We did not win, but we were thrilled to have got so close. The other three Colleges shortlisted were all very large Further Education Colleges and the winner was City and Islington College in London. The awards were presented at the Kensington Roof Gardens venue in London by Bill Rammell, MP, the Government Minister responsible for the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills. FORMER ADULT STUDENTS
Are you a former adult student of the College? When did you take a course with us and what did you do? Many of our former students tell us the impact that taking an adult education course has had on their lives. This may have been by opening up new horizons or by leading to a new job or a career change. Please write and tell us your story – even if it’s only in a few words. It will help us to build up a picture of our former students and maybe, with your permission, we can publish them on our website. We look forward to hearing from you.
